"Serbia imports too much, we need greenhouses"

According to data by the Customs Administration almost 6,000 tonnes of vegetable have been imported to Serbia in the recent three months. "These are not huge quantities but the question to be set is why Serbia should import tomato, paprika and similar at this time of the year and at a price of 80 to 160 Dinars instead of growing vegetables in domestic greenhouses" said Evica Mihaljevic, Director of the Fruits and Vegetables Business Association. Mihaljevic says that Serbia does not have sufficient number of greenhouses reports Blic. "In the recent three months, Serbia mainly imported from (FYR) Macedonia, Croatia, Turkey, Slovenia, Greece and Montenegro. The estimations say that the import shall increase as of the New Year due to market liberalization and lack of greenhouses in Serbia."
