US (CA): Hazmat situation at Salinas Greenhouse, acid spill

A Hazmat team is currently working at a greenhouse in Salinas after an acid spill happened Tuesday morning. The greenhouse belonged to the Oldstage Greenhouse company. Emergency crews have been on scene all morning working to clean up the spill.

Workers discovered that the 500 gallon tank of Nitric Acid was leaking. Experts on scene said that this acid can eat through almost anything and can cause severe damage to the skin and lungs.

Crews are working to clean up the spill and have set up decontamination stations.

At the moment, crews do not believe that this spill will spread to neighbouring properties, but there could be problems if the wind intensifies. There is also a small chance that it could cause an explosion if the gas from the spill ignites, said emergency crews.
