World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) signed an MOU with Wahdat Farms to promote the use of organic fertilizer for better crop yield at WWF’s head office at Ferozepur road. The MoU was signed by Ali Hassan Habib, Director General, WWF-Pakistan and Aurangzeb Khan, Managing Director, Wahdat Enterprises, says a press release issued here on Thursday.
A licensing agreement was also signed by Anwar Naseem, Senior Director Operations, WWF-Pakistan and Muhammad Saleem, National Sales Manager, Wahdat Enterprises for the co-branding of WWF-Pakistan and Organic Power.
Speaking on the occasion, Anwar Naseem said, “We are determined to promote organic fertilizers in agriculture as they are environmental friendly. A small percentage proceeds of the sale of Organic Power will support conservation efforts of WWF-Pakistan”.
Adding to this, Aurangzeb Khan said,”Our innovation will prove to be a breakthrough in agriculture, there’s just a need to create awareness among farmers. For that purpose opinion leaders and influential people of the areas should play their role by guiding farmers regarding the advantages of using organic fertilizer”. The aim to promote organic fertilizers is to create a balanced environment where humans live in harmony with nature. As chemical fertilizers were largely considered harmful for crops and subsequently for humans and the environment, as they lead to build up salt in soil consuming more energy to draw water from the soil and ultimately leading to drying out of plants.
Also they are detrimental to aquatic life as storm water runoff when in contact with such soil leads to the death of marine life.
It was acknowledged that the chemically synthesized inorganic fertilizers undoubtedly have increased agricultural output manifold but have also compromised the health of crops and increased dependence. Resultant yield is of low quality and harmful for the health of humans. On the other hand, organic fertilizers are a naturally rich organic amendment used for improving the performance of all types of soils. It contains no synthetic chemicals; its naturally occurring nutrients are derived slowly from the raw material used in the production. Rich in valuable micro-organisms and humus content, it can be used for all kinds of agricultural lands.
