US: Marketing challenges sustainable local food producers

Local food distributors, food hubs, and local-food purchasing campaigns are helping build markets for locally grown food that relieve some of the marketing burden faced by sustainable producers, says an article in The Guardian. The article relates the experience of diversified sustainable farmer Bill Keener, of Sequatchie Cove Farm in Tennessee. Keener has tried many products, but faces a challenge selling his sustainably produced food locally. Keener cites policies that subsidize farm commodities produced by his competition as part of his challenge, and says the marketing responsibility that independent farmers face is another challenge.
