The tomato demonstration day at De Ruiter was a success. Not only were the capabilities of several well-known varieties were shown, but new ones, like the rootstock DR0141TX and the beef tomato Foronti were introduced. In addition, visitors were informed about developments in the chain and a new grafting machine was showcased.
Merlice, Komeett
Obvious attention went to successes as Komeett and Merlice. Special focus was on Merlice and how it is positioned in the chain. Notable newcomers were highlighted by Nico van Vliet.
Forontiis a beef tomato with 1R-mildew resistance. The very good internal and externalred color makes the fruit distinctive. This breed is being introduced this yearin the Benelux, but already rotated in Poland last season. "Poland is aleader in beef tomatoes," said Van Vliet. "And we always introduce aproduct in the core market."
Kierano
Kierano isa cocktail tomato that appeared on the market three years ago. "The varietyis a real flavour tomato: everyone thinks it's nice, but the yield is lowerthan the other cocktail tomatoes," says Van Vliet. "We want to see ifwe can find suitable partners through alternative channels.”

This cherryvine tomato (18-20 grams) provides an alternative taste. "He's obviouslytastier than others in the category, and we’re happy to show these as part ofthe assortment.”
