Netherlands: Grower Ralph Steegh opts for Santa-tomato

Frans and Bärbel Steegh have been running their tomato company since 1988. Their son Ralph has set up his own business and is growing tomatoes in Wellerlooi as well. Both adhere to the same philosophy.

"We both think it’s unwise to grow too big, and choose to go for quality and distinction instead,” says Ralph. “I’m in daily contact with my father to discuss cultivation, but my mom has a voice in as well. She’s always thinking about innovative things for inspiration.”

The strive for distinction is also evident from the type of tomatoes grown by Ralph. Besides the tasty cocktail tomato, he now grows the Santa-type, a small tomato with a unique pepper-like shape. "We are the only ones in the Netherlands to grow this tomato. It does require some extra attention, but the taste makes it well worth it. This tomato is so delicious,” he goes on to quip, “that I occasionally have to warn my staff not to sample the merchandise too much.”

Another distinctive feature is the sustainable cultivation. That includes the deployment of organic crop protection. "What we want to do this year,” says Ralph, “is to produce a crop that is 100% guaranteed not to contain any pesticide residues.”
