Switzerland: More tomatoes grown on substrate

Hydroponic cultivation, reflects a trend within the Swiss tomatosector. In Switzerland, approximately 85 hectares of tomatoes is now worked thisway. In 2000 it was only 32 hectares. The total production of hydroponicvegetables rose in the same period from 44 to 119 hectares.

"Hydroponics is the most ecological and efficient way to produce vegetables," explainsSimone Meyer of the Union of Swiss vegetable producers (VSGP). "Since itis a closed circuit, soil and water resources are spared and the use ofpesticides is limited.”
