“Mediane gains ground in the market for fresh produce packaging in USA and Canada”

US: Sleeves and bags for hydroponic produce find their way into the North American market

"The US market for fresh produce apparently values improved high quality full-color printing." Peter van Tolingen of Mediane North America LLC, producer of PLA sleeves and bags for agriculture and horticulture says this is the reason why Mediane has acquired a substantial number of customers - mainly on the East Coast at present.

"Our High Definition printing quality and crystal clear films make it possible to technically fulfill the expectations of advertising agencies, retailers and growers. This has resulted in some interesting and sophisticated projects.”

Peter van Tolingen, Director of Mediane North America LLC

Mediane exports its sleeves to practically every country in Europe, ranging from the Scandinavian countries to countries in Southern Europe. Through its sales office and warehouse in Richmond (Virginia, USA) it covers both North America and Canada. You will find Mediane sleeves on the shelves of all major retailers such as a.o. Kroger, Aldi, Lidl, ICA, Asda, Tesco, Delhaize, Carrefour, Edeka, and Morrisons.

"Over the last few years we have specialized in sleeves for lettuce plants and herbs. This focus has resulted in the company achieving a very strong position in the market. Our customers are satisfied because we pay particular attention to the properties and transparency of the film. We print with High Definition Flexo, which provides superior printed material, contributing to a higher quality presentation of the product. Customers, especially here in the US, are specifically impressed with our HD printing quality which enables full-color, photo-like packaging.”

“Also we have specialized in watertight sleeves for Hydroponic produce, a method of growing produce we see a rapid increase of both here in the US as in Europe.”

A challenge to Mediane is the market for lettuce, which in the US is packaged in PET or PP clamshell. This, apart from the high costs, is a heavy burden on the environment. Clamshell packaging of lettuce is unknown in Europe and all lettuce is packaged in either CPP or Bio Sleeves.

“We have managed to move some lettuce growers from clamshells to CPP Sleeves,” Peter van Tolingen says. “If we could just replace 1% of the US clamshell packaging with sleeves, this would be a major commercial success and a positive step towards a cleaner environment as well.”

Logistics

“Our efficient pre-press workflow with on-line approval facilities and short production times, makes it possible to supply our US customers within 6 weeks from the moment the PDF has been approved, or even quicker if the project requires urgency. Either UPS or EPS deliveries from the Richmond (VA) based warehouse reach most customers within 1 or 2 days from call-off date.”

“We have been focusing mainly on the East Coast so far,” Peter says. “Our commercial successes in that part of the States have motivated us to explore our business opportunities on the West Coast too.”

In-house designing and brand management

Brand management
The company also says it is well prepared to handle other expected changes in the market. "Customers are given access to our server system and can view and approve the designs for artwork or request modifications to it whenever they wish. New designs are put on the server within two days, enabling customers to give feedback again. We are the only company offering this kind of flexibility during the design process."

The future
Mediane likes to look ahead and they expect to see a lot of changes in the market in the near future. “We will keep focusing on the demand for high quality printed films. Also we will further invest in the development of PLA Bio Sleeves and other types of films produced from renewable raw materials. We are confident about the future thanks to our well-organized logistical service both in the EU and USA and thanks to our quick service in the fields of pre-press, film quality and printing.”
