"Piet Zwinkels: "prices would be higher if we would cooperate a bit more"
Europe: Radish prices drop after reasonable start to the season
It's good radish weather, but the prices are not there to back it up. "They're pretty low actually," says grower Piet Zwinkels. "It was decent, but since a fortnight they are moderate to poor."
The radish price started dropping a fortnight ago and is still trapped in a descending curve. Before that, the season went reasonably well. "We have had a long cold Spring," says Piet Zwinkels. "But still, there seems to be little demand for radish right now.”
"There is little agreement between growers," continues Zwinkels. "The prices would be higher if we would cooperate a bit more." A producers union for radish growers is one of the options, and work is being done on the formation of a knowledge cooperation, but that is not enough, says Zwinkels. "A growers cooperative is the only good option. This includes the right expertise and a better price, as is reflected in a recent report by industry body LTO Glaskracht. But until now little has been done to achieve it.” Therefore Zwinkels isn’t expecting things to improve any time soon.
