profitability is meagre, especially with CHP usage
Netherlands: “Daily cucumber price higher, revenues still low”
The daily price of cucumbers has been slowly recovering since last week. "Since Friday they have increased slightly. These are the prices you want," says Joop de Hoog of Friskom. "Now all we need is for the presales to go up as well."
“Total production is still 6% behind," says Joop. "The pay-out price for the 40'ers was at 24 cents last week. Friday we were at 25 cents.” The low prices are not in line with production, because the supply is still behind this season. "Production is still behind: 5 to 7%, due to the changeable weather. The price might have something to do with the consumption, but I really doubt it."
Recently it was revealed that a number of company growers switched from tomatoes to cucumbers this year. Not so at Friskom. "We are sticking to our guns,” says Joop. “There has been talk of the mosaic virus going around, but we haven’t noticed it. Still, profitability is meagre, especially with the CHP. It’s just something we’re going to have to live with for now.”
