Build by Van der Hoeven;

France: 66 acres of greenhouses with 80,000 solar panels on top

Van der Hoeven, the Dutch greenhouse builder who this year celebrates its 60th anniversary, is building a special project in Southern France. The project is quite remarkable. But why? The sheer size of 66 acres, spread over 12 locations is impressive, but above all, the integration of 80,000 solar panels distinguishes this project from any other. The client and investor is a French company that leads in the field of solar energy. The greenhouses will be able to generate 18 Mw of electrical power in Southern France.

From strawberry to escargot
The most important goal of this project is to generate solar energy via P.V. panels. But to kill two birds with one stone, cultivation of select produce will also take place. Twelve horticulturists from the South of France have made their land available. They will cultivate in the greenhouses with the solar panel roof, but the solar energy generated is for the benefit of the investor. The greenhouses will be home to a great diversity of fresh produce. The majority of cultivation shall be focused on strawberries, but also allows the cultivation of tomatoes, melons and flowers. One horticulturist will even be producing Frances signature dish, the famous escargot – snails for consumption.

Completion Spring 2014

This month we begin leveling the different pieces of land – primarily situated between Bordeaux and Toulouse, and Marseille and Nîmes - and the prospect is that the completion of this project will be in the Spring of 2014.
