Europe: Supply pressure on tomato price continues

The supply pressure on the price of tomatoes still continues, as mentioned by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. Both in the Netherlands and Belgium prices decreased further until the middle of week 24.

The available supply at the German wholesalers is still greater than the demand. As a result, there is no opportunity to increase prices. This whilst recently the demand, because of the weather conditions, did increase again. In week 24 the number of German households buying tomatoes increased to about 15% - up to now the highest value of this year. Also compared to last year the number of households buying tomatoes was clearly larger. That could be the result of the fact that consumers have to pay less at the moment for tomatoes than last year. The average selling price was Euro 1.60/kg in week 23 which was 14% lower than last year.
