Large companies, lots of space and growers who cooperate in the field of packing and who own the energy company. A visit to Agriport A7 offers a glimpse into the future of horticulture.

Even in cloudy weather, the derrick currently present at Agriport A7 is already visible from afar. One of these days it will start drilling for geothermal energy. "At 2500 meters depth," thinks developer Jack Kranenburg. A short ride also shows the construction activities of four major tomato growers: Kesgro, CombiVliet, Red Harvest and Agro Care. The companies are involved in a joint expansion, bringing the total acreage at Agriport A7 to over 300 hectares. In a mere seven years Agriport A7 has grown into one of the most innovative horticultural companies in the Netherlands. "It is actually a conglomeration of large companies," says Kranenburg. "The scale is often accompanied by a professionalization of the business. What first was really a restriction, is now a competitive advantage."
