Visit to Westland inspires Japanese delegation:

Japan: 35 hectare of modern greenhouse to revitalise Sendai

On Friday, May 31, the Japanese Minister of Agriculture paid a visit to the Dutch municipality of Westland. The Mayor Sjaak van der Tak welcomed the minister and his delegation at the nursery of pepper grower Valstar in De Lier. At the Nursery, the Japanese delegation did not only became acquinted with modern, innovative and sustainable horticulture, but also with the Sendai Horti Experience project; a modern horticultural project in Japan, where Westland entrepreneurs are playing a leading role.



The Japanese minister came especially to The Westlands because of the municipality its reputation as being the most innovative greenhouse cluster on the world. The delegation was impressed about the innovative operations at the nursery and the sustainability of the cultivation process. The growers, brothers Ewout and Wibo Valstar prepared a tour in their 3.5 hectare greenhouse and showed the Minister al of the innovative technique that they use.

The mayor of The Westlands, Mr. Sjaak van der Taak, gave a presentation about the horticultural sustainability programs in his municipality like the Geothermal project Greenwell Westland and the Hoogeland Project. At the Hoogeland project, an entire residential area get heated by greenhouse residual heath.



The reason of the visit from the Japanese minister is Project Sendai. This project is all about the development of 35 hectares of modern greenhouses in Sendai, Japan. The project is a result of a cooperation between several entrepreneurs from the Westland; mr. Rob Baan from Koppert Cress, Remko Bakelaar from Vijverberg Advies and the Brothers Valstar, who will support the project with their horticultural cultivation knowledge.

The municipality of The Westland is supporting the Japanese horticultural project. The 'Sendai Horto Experience' is going to be realized in an area that has been completely devastated during the tsunami in March 2011. The Japanese minister praised The Westland for its support and driving motivation to reconstruct the area and realize sustainable large scale greenhouse complexes in the region.
