"Star Growers grows pink tomato: "sweeter and juicier than average"

Netherlands: Pink vine tomatoes available at QPI

They are sweeter and juicier than the average tomato, and pink in colour - these are the striking tomatoes that Quality Produce International has added to the assortment this year. "It's really different. Not just the colour, the taste is also striking," says Eric Toussaint of QPI.

Pink tomatoes have been available at QPI for a number of weeks now. The speciality tomato is juicy, and thanks to the high brix value, sweeter than ordinary varieties. "It's a really good product, very different," explains Eric Toussaint of QPI. "Not just the colour, the taste is also striking." The pink tomatoes are still packaged in 5 kilo packaging at the moment. "But we can do all sorts with it. Loose, in 5 of 6 kilos and flesh tomatoes in 7 kilo packaging."

Tomato grower Michel de Winter of Star growers discovered the pink tomatoes at Polish growers. "Some people like it, but others think it's far off being a real tomato," he notes. "But the Polish growers were getting a good price for it, and it's something different from the standard product." Before he decided to put the tomatoes in his greenhouse, he conferred with QPI. "We try to grow what the customer wants. At the end of the day, they have to want it. If the customers don't like it, we don't need to grow it."

The first tomatoes, which were harvested at the beginning of April, went primarily to Russia. Now the British customers also want the product. "Not pallets full every day," Toussaint jokes. "It's really special, it's not for supermarkets. It's interesting for a caterer, good for restaurants. It's really an experience, not intended for mass production."
