France: Production figures French greenhouse strawberries increased

The French strawberry acreage this year is 3,263 ha. This is only 1% more than in 2012, according to data from the French Ministry of Agriculture. In recent years, but especially this year, the strawberry sector has been undergoing major structural changes. The cultivation on open ground has decreased with 30% in comparison to 2012, and the production under low shelter declined with 32% compared to 2011.

In contrast, high-shelter production increased with 35% compared to 2012. Greenhouse cultivation takes up 65%, in Aquitaine even 77%, of this year’s total strawberry acreage.

The ministry estimates that the yield is now 55,341 tons: an increase of 4% compared to 2012. In addition, these changes also bring a departure of production schedules, as the peak of strawberry cultivation now lies in May.
