US: Ohio greenhouse Perennials Preferred catches fire

A Chester Township greenhouse caught fire last Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were called to Perennials Preferred, formerly Mapes Greenhouse, at 7572 Mayfield Road around 2 p.m. “The homeowner was inside the building using a propane tank with a torch on the end to burn weeds,” Chester Township Fire Chief John Wargelin said. “It was very windy, so it got away from him real quick. Eight greenhouses were burning, and it spread to an apartment building and a barn. The plastic burning creates a lot of thick, black smoke. We were trying to get two people out of the building, but they were resisting us a little.”

No injuries were reported, but a firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion. Luckily, he did not need to be hospitalised, the chief said.

Most of the damage was contained to the rear of the property, with smoke damage inside, Wargelin said.
