Dutch growers get lower compensation for pepper weevil infection

The compensation to be paid to six grower who last year had to deal with an infestation of the dreaded pepper weevil, is lower than expected. The planned budget of a million euro is therefore not required after all. The so-called ‘Pepper Weevil levy’ will also be lower as a result, says the Board for Dutch Horticulture in its newsletter.

The first companies received their reimbursement in March/early April, on the stipulation that the European Commission agrees with the terms of the reimbursement. Once that is the case, the Board will impose the levy on people in the horticultural industry, including growers, traders and those processing vegetables.

The compensation is the result of an agreement between the industry (LTO Glaskracht Netherlands, FrugiVenta and Plantum) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Entrepreneurs affected by the weevil will get 50% of the appraised damage, with government and industry each paying half the amount.
