Netherlands: Special design for vertical greenhouse tower in Naaldwijk

Consultancy and design company ‘Except Integrated Sustainability’ from Rotterdam, together with several partners of the Foundation for Innovative Greenhouse Netherlands (SIGN), designed the Hortus Celestia. The Hortus is a vertical greenhouse tower situated in Naaldwijk. The tower rises out of the Westland horticultural scenery with its 28 floors, 14 of which are dedicated to cultivation. The tower also houses exhibition rooms and offices. Now the preliminary design is reaching conclusion, people are getting ready for a full analysis of the project’s achievability.

The tower can function as a demonstration center for the innovative strength of glasshouse companies in the Westland, and will also attract international visitors to the district. The new building will be enclosed by an ecological park.

The ‘Celestial Garden’ will sport a series of demonstrative nurseries where crop production is shown to the public. On the landscaped roof of the 262ft tower, the visitor is allowed to experience the view and the green innovation in the surrounding area. The ground floor accommodates an auditorium, restaurants, exhibitions and events, and shows the innovative techniques involved. The tower is surrounded by offices, schools and demonstration greenhouses.
