The pepper Open Day took place on 28th March 2013 at the Tomato Experience Centre of Monsanto ad Acate (Sicily). This year, it was dedicated to the Cariddi pepper, the medium-long variety commercialised under the Seminis brand.
More than 200 people took part of the event. Among them, there were representatives from local companies specialised in Autumn-Winter peppers, retailers of the Vittoria area, nursery gardeners and technicians.
Cariddi peppers drew considerable attention because of their characteristics, which fit the needs of the current market perfectly: plants produce a high number of bright red fruits that set which are medium-long, rather heavy and with wide smooth sides with a regular shape (4 lobes).
"Considering the transplant date (5th October 2012), Cariddi plants showed an excellent capacity of reacting to the temperature variations which occurred during February and grew fruits without problems, which surprised all of the visitors. In addition to this, plants are now reaching new vegetative peaks if we count the number of fruits," explains Ignazio Cacciaguerra, Sales Promoter of Monsanto Agricoltura Italia SpA.
Other varieties which are still being experimented were also on display. A variety of medium-long yellow peppers caught the attention of the visitors. It has wide smooth sides and is ideal for setting and for September-October transplants.
