"Netherlands: "First crops look good, despite the gloomy weather"
Duijvestijn Tomatoes opertes on 13.5 hectares and retails production through the Greenery. This season, plum tomatoes are grown on the farm for the first time: in this case the Prunus variety. "Oblong and oval, deep red and strong," explains Duijvestijn. Previously, the company grew only common tomatoes. "But from customers came the increasingly demand for a plum tomato.” The first crops look good, despite the gloomy weather. "The plants looks nice and we expect to deliver excellent quality."
The company also keeps 10.5 hectares of common tomatoes: the Elanto and since last season, the Arvento. "For both races there is market demand," says Duijvestijn. "Elanto is mainly for the British market, Arvento usually find its way to Scandinavia and the Netherlands." Arvento is of constant quality and color, a stable factor in the cultivation. Elanto is known for its great flavour and high fruit quality, but is more difficult to grow because the breed is highly responsive to the amount of radiation from the sun.
