Having exported 600 quintals of mint and 700 quintals of coriander, Vittoria's (Sicily) Autore Giombattista commercial farm, specialised in the production of the most popular herbs, has had a great winter season.
"Currently, there's an increase in Europe's demand for mint and coriander, especially from Romania, Germany and Switzerland. Italy is interested in mint, but coriander is not as popular," explains Giombattista.
"With respect to last year, the cultivation has tripled, whereas prices have remained more or less the same. According to European clients, they prefer the Sicilian product because it looks better and has a nicer scent," comments the producer.
South-East Sicily has in fact quite a favourable micro-climate, which contributes to the deep colour and unique aroma of herbs.

"Products are packet according to the needs of the customer: loose in crates for processing, in 1 kg boxes, in bunches and also processed in various sizes of trays."
Traditionally, transportation is carried out by road, however recently we have used air transport, which is ideal for new markets.
"For the future, we aim at doubling the supply of all of our products, even if the most requested is by far basil, with 150 quintals harvested during the 5 winter months. And demand is still growing," concludes Giombattista Autore.
