Netherlands: Increase of demand for snack vegetables

Dutch consumers not only spend lots of money on candy and snacks but, as it turns out, also on bite-sized snack vegetables like snack tomatoes, cucumbers and mini peppers. In 2012, over 27 million euro was spent on snack vegetables in Dutch supermarkets.

Sales of snack vegetables have gone up by 337% between 2009 to 2012, while those of candy increased with only 16% in the past five years, says the latest evidence by the Study Centre for Snacks and Confectionery. Especially snack tomatoes are very popular with the Dutch. The tomatoes represent 92% of total sales. In 2012 the Dutch spent 25 million euro on the items.

Packaged snack tomatoes in bags of 200 and 250 grams grew from 2 million units in 2009 to more than 10 million units in 2012. The snack tomatoes, packed in a container of 500 grams, were introduced in 2011. In a single year, sales amounted to 1,7 million units.

The demand for cucumbers remains stable. The mini peppers had a slight dip two years ago, but demand for this healthy snack increased significantly last year. The snack tomatoes, cucumbers and mini peppers contain many good nutrients, come in handy takeout containers and fit perfectly into a healthy diet.
