"Colombia: Eggplant under threat from "crypticeria henistae"

Columbia eggplants are under attack from the crypticeria henistae, a moth nestling in a variety of plant species. This is according to laboratory studies conducted by the Laboratorio de Diagnóstico Fitosanitario del ICA, in Cordoba.

Nelson Villarreal Pretel, entomologist at the laboratory, has issued a forecast. He found that the crypticeria, originally from Brazil, was already present in Colombia, mostly in guava crops and teak. The only way to combat this insect is by organic means, as it is resistant to chemicals. One option is to release the Chrysopa, a lacewing, and there is an even more effective natural enemy, the ladybird. But while they efficiently deal with plague, they can also seriously damage crops.

The moth is very likely to spread, because the insect is small and easily sticks to clothing. Therefore Villarreal Pretel recommends people to avoid visiting infected regions.
