Though a relative newcomer to the greenhouse manufacturing business, Nassan Greenhouse Systems has found success at home and abroad. Now one of Turkey's leading manufacturers of greenhouses, Nassan's Ruslan Niyazov credits their ability to adapt to the market as an important part of their business.
“We have a lot of knowledge because of our people have a lot of experience in greenhouses,” said Niyazov. “But we also have lots of people who are young, speak lots of languages and are able to learn things quickly.” Though experience is obviously very important, being able to sense the market and cater to what customers need is equally important. To that end, they quickly learned that in order to thrive in the Turkish market they'd need to know what it takes to grow in Turkey.

“The company has been in business for 77 years, but only seven years ago did we start to make greenhouses,” said Niyazov. “We build glass type greenhouses and plastic greenhouses. The choice of the materials depends on the location of the greenhouse and of course the customers desire. For example, because there is a lot of strong wind in Antalya, we put polycarbonate on the sides of our greenhouses and polyethylene on the roof.” The polycarbonate on the sides of the greenhouses protect from high winds, and Niyazov noted that just a few weeks ago strong winds hit many Turkish growers, but the greenhouses they manufactured were not affected. “Our greenhouses had no problem,” said Niyazov.

They also work with foreign growers on projects outside of Turkey, and most of their business outside of the country is done in Russia. They've just completed the second part of a long-term project there that will see them build 73 hectares of greenhouse space in the next four years, and that's a sign of their strong growth. Another sign of that growth, pointed out Niyazov, is the new factory they're building.

“The new factory will be bigger and will include all of the systems we need,” he said. They need the extra production capacity because in addition to foreign customers, they've also become one of the leading suppliers to large growers in Turkey, where greenhouse tomato growers supply off-season produce for the Russian market. "Naturally, there are some Turkish growers or company's that are investing in technique from abroad. Most of these new greenhouses are financed by European money, and therefore some Western technique is involved. But on the other hand, we gain more business by the day, because our techniques can keep up with them and we speak the local language."

Niyazov is happy to see that the greenhouse industry in Turkey is emerging quite fast. "It's is good that Turkish growers are familiar with the latest techniques, not only on hydroponics, crop protection and other agronomical aspects, but also the sustainable aspects are gaining popularity. We are looking forward to build new greenhouses for them!"
