Austria: Price comparison: Fair Trade vs. Austrian flowers

With Valentine's Day last week, the flower trade did some good business recently. But not every flower is the same. In Austria the demand for Fair Trade flowers also showed a discernible increase. Comparing prices between the two in twelve flower shops and seven supermarkets in Vienna showed that Fair Trade roses, although more expensive, are actually not as expensive as people think.

Workers on flower farms in, for example, Colombia, Uganda and Guatemala operate largely under very poor conditions. Moreover, the excessive use of pesticides in these countries lead to serious illnesses. On all farms with a certified label, workers are assured of fair wages and better working conditions.
