Spain: Tomates del Guadiana to expand production capacity
Tomates del Guadiana, a tomato processing cooperative from the Spanish province of Badajoz, announced that it will expand its production capacity to 50 million kilos per campaign from 2013. The announcement was made by its president, Domingo Fernández, at the 25th edition of Agroexpo.
This ambitious project, which is already underway, will involve the installation of new machinery able to handle additional volumes of tomatoes on top of the 200 million kilos that the firm was processing up until now.
In 2013, the plant will be able to process 250 million kilos of tomatoes and 20 million kilos of fruit. This increase will entail the hiring of 2 or 3 extra workers for the entire year and 20 to 25 workers during the season's peak.
The other challenge for the firm is the acquisition, along with Acopaex, of Carcesa. Advances are also being made in the commercialisation of lycopene.
Fernández highlights the improvements made in the tomato market, which have led to better sales of the product. Product shipments have almost doubled. "We are in a better position because of China's low production and some problems in Italy," pointed out Fernández.
