Belgium: First tomatoes of new season at Veling Hoogstarten

During the sixth week of 2013, namely on Wednesday 6th of February, the first cocktail tomatoes of the new season were available at Veiling Hoogstraten. Ruud de Jong from Wuustwezel delivered 314 small boxes on Wednesday morning. They were sold at a middle price of Euro2,42/kg. The first buyer at the clock was MARNA N.V. from Zemst.



Tomatoes are an important product for Hoogstraten. For Veiling Hoogstraten these are mainly tomatoes on the vine, which form about 90% of the tomato assortment. By the means of research Proefcentrum Hoogstraten support its cultivation. They are busy all year round with research in order to supply Belgian tomatoes to the market.
 
Veiling Hoogstraten is a growers association with more than 250 supplying members and mainly supplies strawberries and glasshouse vegetables. In 2012 a production turnover of 164,5 million Euro was realised. Veiling Hoogstraten is associated with
5 fruit and vegetable auction houses spread over all of Belgium, in the cooperative
Lava cvba. Lava controls the Belgiam fruit and vegetable hallmark Flandria.
