Suriname: LVV minister officially opens first Surinamese greenhouse

This week, Surinamese Minister Hendrik Sterowidjojo of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV), officially opened the first of nine greenhouses (from the project "Provision of nine greenhouses") on the site of the Agriculture Directorate. The greenhouse was inaugurated by the symbolic planting of tomato seedlings, says Harold Soemodihardjo of GFC News.

This greenhouse is one of the nine greenhouses placed on the site of the Centre for Agricultural Research Suriname (Celos), the resort office in Paradise, the resort office in Wageningen, the site in Brokopondo, the district office at Calcutta, the resort office in Wanica , the site of the LVV-office in Kwatta and the one in Domburg.

The aim of the project is to motivate farmers to move into well-protected agriculture and to increase production. Farmers are also advised to grow organically, as insects and other pests have a hard time getting into the greenhouse.

A study on the acidity in the soil (taken from the ground in the greenhouse on the ODL-site) has shown that the soil has a pH value of 6.8, which means that it is suitable for tomato propagation. The staff of the Agriculture Directorate is responsible for the maintenance. This staff (including those who are not officers) will be trained and supervised accordingly.
