Bulgaria: Turkey ships tomatoes exceeding European formetanate MRLs

On January 25, a batch of Turkish tomatoes was detected at the Bulgarian border with the Maximum Residue Limit that was above the legal limit. The active material detected, formetanate, was at levels of 0.383 milligrams per kilogram.

This is three times the amount allowed for this active ingredient in tomatoes within the European Union; as such, its destruction, in a place approved for this purpose, was commissioned.

The last alert on Turkish tomatoes occurred in March 2011, when several batches of Turkish tomato destined to Greece to be re-exported to the European Union. The active substance detected then was procymidone.

To date, borders have not been closed to Turkish suppliers, whose main export destination is Russia.
