on the edge of bankruptcy

50 hectare Dutch greenhouse grower Seasun in trouble due to energy costs

One of the biggest Dutch greenhouse growers is in trouble. Seasun, a 50 hectare greenhouse complex based in Kapelle, Zeeland, is on the edge of bankruptcy due to a conflict with energy supplier Delta. The hydroponic pepper and tomato grower didn't pay its electricity bills as a protest against the high energy prices, and now energy supplier Delta threatens to stop supplying high temperature water, electricity and CO2.

Seasun is in dispute with Delta Energy concerning an energy contract both companies signed in the 90's. At that time the contract was very attractive for Seasun, but nowadays the company's energy costs per square meter are way more than normal. According to grower Wim Gresnigt of Seasun the Energy prices were based on oil prices. "We are paying more then 18 Euro of energy costs to grow tomatoes on a square meter. Nowadays, there is no other grower buying energy for that amount of money."

Energy supplier Delta is owner of the CHP's that provide Seasun with heat, electricity and CO2. Delta offered Seasun the CHP's. "Delta wants to sell us the CHP's, but they offer them for a price that is way to much. I don't see any reason why they are giving us such a hard time. There is no possibility to talk with them about the contract."
