Health food might become luxury item

Austria: Fresh produce 15% more expensive

In Austria, fresh fruit and vegetables have become much more expensive – 15% more to be exact. Potatoes prices even went up with a whopping 43%, tomato prices with 24%. “That of all the items in the supermarket it had to be health food that became expensive, is very painful; especially for people with low income,” says Siegfried Pichler, chairman of Austria’s consumer agency AK. “The latter already have increased energy costs to cope with.”

Other common groceries also went up in price. Meat products with 10% on average. Dairy products like yoghurt and cheese actually became cheaper, also with 10%. Coffee beans went down 25%, mineral water with 25%, frozen pizza with 17%. In total, 48% of food items have become more expensive this year. 46% has become cheaper and 6% stayed the same.
