Elevated pricing on Mexican broccoli

At the moment, production of broccoli out of Mexico is a bit slower, which results in elevated pricing. "Pricing currently holds at $13.50/case," says Mario Cisneros with Perlag Imports in Texas. "Usually, it's closer to $10-$11/case this time of year." The company works with partner growers in Mexico's Puebla region, a well-known vegetable-growing region with year-round production. From Puebla, it takes about two days for the product to reach the company's warehouse in McAllen, TX, which serves as the center for nationwide distribution.

Due to lower production numbers, supply and demand are out of balance. "Demand is really high," commented Cisneros. "Despite the higher price, consumers are still buying broccoli. They are willing to pay more."

Recently, Perlag Imports added a new label to their broccoli offering: Brocc Lee. "It's a premium quality product. During the harvesting process, we try to be more selective, which results in a higher quality overall as well as a better presentation," said Lee. In addition to the Brocc Lee label, Perlag Imports offers broccoli under the Panda label as well as a generic label.

Product expansion
In addition to a new broccoli label, the company started bringing in limes under their own label called Tarasco. "We've been bringing in limes for about a year now but have just started to bring them in under our own label and in our own box." Limes will be available year-round. Mangos are another product that's new for Perlag Imports this year. "We will be bringing in Ataulfo, Tommy, Hayden, and Kent mangos." The season started this month, and both products are distributed nationwide.
