Photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen has been spending a lot of time recently with farmers and horticulturists as he is creating series about them, such as the currently airing TV series Food for Thought. On the TV program Buitenhof, he said he gained a better understanding of farmers.
This understanding comes, he explains, from seeing how 'they have been put through the wringer' and how for years they were always expected by banks and the government to scale up, and now they are paying the price for it. "They feel they have no perspective."
The sector's problem also lies with the consumer, Kadir shares in a snippet, which was also shared by growers on social media. He uses the price of milk as an example, which he says is too low and has been so for a long time, while 'we' all find it 'too expensive.' "Ultimately, we are not paying a fair price for our food. Something will have to change in the Netherlands. We are really hitting the limits."
Kadir has already visited the US and China for his TV series. After all, much of our food comes from abroad and travels an average of 30,000 kilometers before it reaches our plates.
Next week, Kenya is featured in the series, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also on the list. Besides a TV series, an exhibition and a photo book have been created.
Kadir previously toured in the Netherlands, which also resulted in a TV program.
