India: Tomato prices surge in Dharmapuri region due to low arrivals

In a recent market trend observed in Dharmapuri, a hub for tomato trade in India, there has been a notable spike in tomato prices. The escalation in prices is primarily attributed to the dwindling arrivals of the produce in the market. This phenomenon is impacting both the retail and wholesale segments. The situation has been exacerbated by unfavorable weather conditions, including unseasonal rains, which have adversely affected tomato crops, leading to a reduction in yield.

Market insiders reveal that the supply shortfall is also linked to the transition between the harvest seasons. Typically, Dharmapuri, along with neighboring regions, serves as a critical supply zone for tomatoes, catering to demands across various parts of Tamil Nadu and even extending to other states. However, the current supply-demand imbalance has put a strain on the market, pushing prices to a new high.

One wholesale trader said: " Right now we get over 8 tons of tomatoes in the Palacode tomato market. Usually at this time of the month we would get over 20 tons. We get 700 to 800 tons in the peak season. Now we get only 20 tons. The prices are not that high despite the low supply. A 35 kg box is sold at between Rs 250 to Rs 350."
