Canada: latest greenhouse tomato statistics

In the latest greenhouse tomato statistics from the Canadian statistics service released this past week, some interesting numbers were published. The total area at the end of 2017 was 633 hectares. The production was 278 mT. The average price was C$ 2.00. The "farm gate value" growers received was C$ 557 million.

To compare the rounded numbers to 2016, the percent increase in area was 6%. However, the increase in production was only 3%. The increase in farm gate value to the grower was 4%.

Going back 4 years to 2013, the 2017 numbers show a 12% increase in area. However, according to the figures published, the yield was down 2% over this period. The farm gate price per kilogram received was up 9% and the total farm gate value received increased 8%.
