China: Production of Qianxi cherry tomatoes trebles

Cherry tomatoes have been on the market for a while and the price has experienced great fluctuations. Hainan Qianxi cherry tomatoes are a relatively new variety but this year the production volume trebled. How will the price develop?

Qianxi cherry tomato plantations have expanded rapidly in recent years, and intensive planting has led to a decrease in average yield per hectare. Furthermore, quality and taste have suffered from this rapid expansion. Add to this such factors as weather, transport costs, and market demand, and it is not surprising that the purchase price of Qianxi cherry tomatoes has dropped from 6 yuan [0.96 USD] per 0.5 kg before the Spring Festival to as low as 1 yuan [0.16 USD]. Farmers experience serious difficulties in the production and sales of small tomatoes.

Hainan Qianxi cherry tomatoes

March has just passed and small tomatoes are now entering the market in large volumes. The current market price is lower than last year. This development is mainly caused by the following issues: the production volume increased and more cherry tomatoes suffered as a result of weather conditions meaning some of the harvest was below standard quality. Despite these conditions, the market prospects for Qianxi cherry tomatoes still look good.

Hainan Qianxi cherry tomatoes are almost out of season, but Shandong cherry tomatoes have just entered the market. The overall surface area devoted to cherry tomato plantations in Qingdao has increased, and the production volume increased by 10% in comparison with last production season. Apart from Hainan and Shandong, there is also a sizeable cherry tomato production in Guangxi.
