Spain: Almeria is the world's leading aubergine exporter

In 2016, the province of Almeria ranked first in the list of the world's main aubergine exporters, ahead of Mexico and the Netherlands, according to data from the Statistics Division of the United Nations (UN), COMTRADE, and the statistical service ESTACOM, with code 070930 of the Tariff Integrated of the European Communities.

The total sales (export) of aubergines during the year 2016 reached 456.06 million kilos. The value of those aubergines exported in 2016 was 407.83 million Euro, with an average price of 0.894 Euro per kilo.

By countries, the top three exporters alone (Spain, Mexico and the Netherlands) account for almost half of the world's exports: 48.64 percent of the total volume.

The ranking of exporters is led by Spain, with a volume of 152.85 million kilos, of which 78.61 percent (120.16 million kilos) were exported by Almeria. The volume of aubergines exported by Spain accounts for 33.52 percent of the world total, while Almeria's shipments represented 26.35 percent of all the aubergines exported in the world.

The total value of Spanish aubergine exports was 136.53 million Euro, with an average price of 0.893 Euro per kilo. Of these, 104.26 million Euro correspond to Almeria, which sold the vegetable at an average price of 0.868 Euro per kilo.

Mexico ranks second in the world, with 61.66 million kilos (13.52 percent of the total) worth 56.8 million Euro and an average price of 0.921 Euro per kilo.

The third position in the ranking was for the Netherlands, with a volume of 52.89 million kilos (11.6 percent of the total) worth 74.13 million Euro and an average price of 1.4 Euro per kilo.

Destinations
As for the main customers for each country, Spain shipped 47.52 million kilos to France, 34.07 to Germany, 20.02 to Italy, 12.74 to the United Kingdom and 11.87 million kilos to the Netherlands.

For its part, Mexico exported 96.41 percent of its aubergines to the US market.

As for the Dutch export, 19.69 million kilos went to Germany, 13.7 were shipped to the United Kingdom, 3.12 to Sweden, 2.2 to Poland and 1.8 million kilos to France.
