The Velez-Malaga-based agricultural cooperative Trops, which handles the production of some 2,300 families, devoted mainly to subtropical crops such as avocados and mangoes, has decided to gradually abandon one of its lesser known lines: the sale of aromatic herbs.
This has been announced by the manager of this entity, Enrique Colilles, while recalling that the production of common parsley and cilantro was intended for the United Kingdom. "At a given point, this line has come to generate an annual turnover of about three million Euros, but now there are only three or four families devoted to these crops within the whole group, so we have chosen to abandon them and specialise decisively in avocados and mangoes."
Juan Ferrer stressed that the key to the excellence of aromatic herbs in La axarquia was not in the optimal climate of the eastern region, but in the "elaboration with much care and dedication of the 30 gram bunches that were demanded by the UK."
But since this is a very specific demand and the growth of subtropical crops in the AxarquÃa is in full swing, the search for suitable land has not been easy over the last two years.
Now, with the depreciation of the pound, a further downward trend has been further sharpened, reminiscent of decades past. In fact, Juan Ferrer states that there have been important rises and falls in the price of herbs. A possible option in recent months was the search for new markets, but it may have already been too late for that.
