A few more weeks and the British tomatoes are back

Just a few more weeks and the supply of British grown greenhouse produce will take off again. In the meanwhile, British market intelligence service Produce View reports the current offer in the UK supermarkets.

Looking at the data, supplies seems to be back to normal again after some turbulent weeks with extremely low supplies as a result of bad weather in Southern Europe.
Cucumbers are mainly coming from Spain and Morocco. Co-op and Sainsbury's are the only two British retailers who offer Dutch cucumbers.

Average pricing of cucumbers lies around 50p. Lidl and Aldi offer the lowest priced cucumbers at 49p. The Dutch cucumbers at Co-op are sold at 59p (versus 49p for Spanish cucumbers at the same supermarket last week). The Dutch cucumbers at Sainsbury's cost 50p.

While available from Holland, the British supermarkets still prefer to buy baby plum tomatoes from Moroccan and Spanish growers. Sainsbury's even imported baby plum tomatoes from Senegal last week. There were not much changes in the pricing of baby plum tomatoes observed, they have remained stable over the weeks with an average price between 3 and 3,30 £/KG.

This stability is also the case for the supply of red bell peppers; most of the British supermarkets visited offer Spanish bell peppers. Tesco imports Israeli peppers and Asda has been sourcing them from Holland, which they have been doing so since November last year. Prices are as low as 47p for a pepper at Lidl and Aldi to as high as 65p for a pepper at Co-op.
