EU law-makers urge members to cut food waste in half by 2030

While not a binding regulation, European Union countries urged members to cut food waste by half by 2030. Environmental activists voiced their disappointment at the lack of legislation to make the initiative official.

The European Parliament's environment committee in Brussels voted in favor of new regulations which would encourage EU nations to reduce food produced and never eaten to 30 percent by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030.

"(The vote) fulfilled a moral obligation," MEP Simona Bonafe commented.

According to some predictions, around one third of all food produced worldwide never reaches consumers and instead goes to the garbage. The main causes for which are spoiled foods after harvest and during transportation, or produce thrown away by shops and consumers.

The move to cut food waste is an attempt at fighting the currently estimated 800 million people worldwide who go to bed hungry without easy access to food, according to United Nations figures.
