10% growth of exported volume:

Spain: Good campaign for Almería's horticultural sector

A study carried out by Cajamar 'confirms the good progress of the Almería horticultural sector and the sustained growth of its main magnitudes'.

In the 2015-2016 marketing year, fruit and vegetable production increased by 4.6% reaching 3,370,000 tons, the acreage stood at 55,195 hectares (+2%), the traded value reached €1.800 million (+1.6%), and the exported volume grew by 10%.

75.4% of the production was exported which meant an income of €2,190 million.

Costs grew moderately (+0.3%), while running costs increased by 0.5% especially due to the water price which increased by 7%.

The study also points out that in recent years there is a structural change in Almería horticulture, so that growers progressively lengthen their production periods to improve profitability.

The full study in Spanish is available here.
