Spain: Peppers generate almost 16,000 euros per hectare

During the 2014/2015 campaign, greenhouse pepper cultivation in the province of Almeria generated a net profit of almost 150 million euros, according to a report based on data from the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Government of Andalusia.

During the aforementioned campaign, Almeria had 9,270 hectares of greenhouses devoted to pepper cultivation, which produced a total of 629.51 million kilos of all varieties. These yielded a gross income of 477.08 million euros, while costs for the growers reached 330.49 million euros, resulting in a net profit of 147.59 million euros. This translates into a net income of 15,921 euros per hectare.

The transplantation period this year has been set to take place between mid-June for the early plantings and mid-August for the later ones.
