The impact of Russian crisis on floral trade

Due to the civil war in Ukraine, Eastern Europe had to deal with difficult times last year. This year, will also be challenging due to the drastic devaluation of the Russian ruble and the Ukraine Hryvnia in the last few months. Consequently, the ornamental trade will be affected, explains Hennie Brockhoff, owner of Topflower BV.

According to Hennie Brockhoff of Schreurs,a Dutch breeder of roses and Gerberas, the Russian and Ukrainian market is challenging for the ornamental sector at the moment. The customers in these markets are hesitant and due to the devaluation of the Ruble and Hryvnia, current transactions are being postponed. Additionally, the current situation might also affect other activities of Schreurs, like the Flowers and HorTech and tradeshow that is planned in 2015, for example.

Topflower BV is the agent for Schreurs that is focused on the Eastern European market. The family-owned breeding company Schreurs supplies growers with varieties all over the world. Approximately 75% of the rose production in Eastern Europe comes from plants produced by Schreurs, and inside this market Schreurs has approximately 35-40% of its varieties available.



Last year, Schreurs planned to attend the Flowers and HorTech Tradeshow in Ukraine. However, due to the unrest in Ukraine, the tradeshow was cancelled. Next year, the Flowers and HorTech Tradeshow will be organized again and Schreurs will attend the show. For Schreurs, the show is important. "As a major supplier to this market, you have to be there." Even with the current situation in Eastern Europe, Hennie expects the show to continue this year. "We expect the Expo to be smaller, which will probably not have an effect on the importancy of the Expo. For many years now, the Expo is attractive to customers because it is during the season that many customers make important decisions.
