The name basil comes from the ancient Greek word ‘Basileus,’ which means ‘king’ or ‘regal.’ Basil is an herb that is used globally, and many people associate it with the Italian and Mediterranean kitchen. It is less known that basil is also much used in the Indonesian and Thai kitchen. In India, basil is a sacred herb, and it’s offered to the Hindu gods. The flowers of the plant are mostly used to decorate rice and vegetable recipes, and to add a flavour twist.
