US (MA): Heritage Museums & Gardens to host hydrangeas 2015 conference on Cape Cod

Heritage Museums & Gardens, one of the premier gardens in the Northeast, will host Hydrangeas 2015 in the summer of 2015, featuring leading horticulturists and experts in the cultivation of this iconic flowering plant. Renowned tree and shrub expert, author, and hydrangea hybridizer Dr. Michael Dirr will deliver the keynote lecture. In 2015, Dirr was made a Fellow in the National Academy of Inventors; the only ornamental plant breeder to ever receive this distinction.

The three-day conference will be held July 14, 15 & 16 in the hydrangea-rich setting of Cape Cod. It is part of the first ever Cape Cod-wide Hydrangea Festival happening this summer.

The conference will promote the exchange of cutting- edge information on hydrangeas and cover a diverse array of critical topics. Hydrangea lectures will be held each morning, with garden tours to follow in the afternoons.

“Heritage is honored to host Hydrangeas 2015,” said Ellen Spear, Heritage Museums & Gardens President & CEO. “Known for its breathtaking ecology and beauty, Cape Cod has a fascinating history of horticulture, as well as a maritime climate well-suited for the cultivation of Hydrangea macrophylla – the crown jewel of the genus – which will be in full bloom as the conference takes place in July.”

Heritage Museums & Gardens is well known for its rhododendrons. Thanks to its partnership with the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society, Heritage is also home to a substantial and beautiful hydrangea collection.

As part of the Hydrangeas 2015 conference, tours highlighting local hydrangea-rich private gardens will be held on Tuesday, July 14th and Wednesday, July 15th. Thursday, July 16, will be a full Heritage Day dedicated to tours of all garden areas including the Hydrangea Collection. Thursday evening will also feature the Conference Banquet followed by an Ice Cream Social and a Question & Answer forum to conclude the three-day long event.
