Growing demand for used horticultural machines

Some 25 years ago, Geert van der Meer and his father found that the resale of horticultural machines was an opportunity in the market. In particular: the purchasing of used Dutch horticultural machinery and materials and machines and resell them abroad.

“Today, we provide horticultural machines and materials to nearly sixty countries," says Geert of Hortimat. "The quality of Dutch horticultural machinery is unique. After revision, a machine from the year 2000 can easily work for another ten years. We have orders from Mongolia to Hawaii.”

The range of Hortimat is enormous. Processing machines, dripping systems, support material, Hortimat buys it all. The purchased material gets the Hortimat treatment, and is ready for a second life. "A machine is thoroughly cleaned, gets new parts and is treated with a high-quality coating. They all receive a specific code. If we get a call from a customer that there are problems with a machine, we can see exactly which machine it is and what has happened to it."

But it doesn’t have to be Mongolia or Hawaii. The Dutch themselves think that in horticulture, buying brand new stuff isn’t always necessary. "We recently delivered to a budding entrepreneur, right here in the Westland. A company that runs bouquets for export. Seventy percent of their machines come from us!"
