New warehouse in Lille for downgraded fruit and vegetables, Atypique:

“We are excited to build a more sustainable food future for everyone”

French wholesaler Atypique, specializing in downgraded fruit and vegetables, has opened its 4th warehouse in Lille. This follows a recent fund-raising of 2,1 million euros [2.3 million USD], marking a new phase of expansion for the company. Founded in March 2021 by Simon Charmette and Thibault Kibler with the aim of structuring the BtoB downgraded fruit and vegetable sector, the wholesaler now supports nearly 120 growers and claims to have saved "3,000 tons of fruit and vegetables."

Present in several French cities, including Lyon, Paris, and Marseille, this new opening in Lille will enable the company to extend its "footprint in France, reinforcing its commitment to the fight against food waste. Not only does this strengthen the company's ability to provide quality service, it also brings it closer to its clients. This increased proximity will make it possible to better meet the clients' needs," explains Thibault Kibler, co-founder of Atypique. "We are excited to continue building a more sustainable food future for everyone."

In France, over 13 million tons of food are wasted every year. According to ADEME (French Agency for Ecological Transition), fruits and vegetables account for nearly 30% of the country's total food waste.

How does it work?
The startup's operations are based on a "transparent and efficient model." The company buys produce directly from French producers at a fair price, stores it in its regional warehouses, and then delivers it rapidly to its clients. "The offer consists of 90% of labeled products (Organic or HEV). We offer fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables at prices up to 50% lower than those of traditional distributors."

Thibault Kibler and Simon Charmette

In September 2023, Simon Charmette announced plans to open six new hubs in France during 2024: Lille, Nantes, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, and Toulouse.
