Italian green asparagus ready for start of harvest

Everything is ready for the start of the 2024 production campaign of the Green Asparagus of Altedo PGI in Italy, recognized at the European level for its taste.

The Consortium for the Protection of Green Asparagus of Altedo PGI, together with the imminent start of the harvesting campaign, will be the protagonist of a communication campaign created thanks to the contribution of the Emilia Romagna Region. It is presented in the context of Rural Development and the SRG10 Plan for the promotion of agricultural products for which the Green Asparagus of Altedo PGI is the holder of financing.

The Green Asparagus of Altedo, recognized with the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), represents a culinary experience that combines tradition and quality. The fertile land and the favorable climate of the territory circumscribed by the PGI Production Regulations which goes from the plain of Lower Bolognese, in the Altedo area, and continues to the sea, in the Mesola area, involving 52 municipalities (30 in the province of Bologna and 22 in that of Ferrara), contribute to the cultivation of asparagus with a unique flavor, appreciated by gourmets all over the world.

This year's harvest forecast is of abundant and very high-quality production, a higher asparagus harvest than last year is expected. In parallel with the harvest, the Consortium for the Protection of Green Asparagus of Altedo PGI has planned, through the project financed by the Emilia Romagna Region, a series of communication initiatives to promote and enhance this culinary treasure. Through events, tastings, social media activities, and collaborations with chefs and restaurateurs, we aim to spread knowledge and appreciation for Altedo Green Asparagus, both nationally and internationally.

The communication project will reach Italian and German markets
The President of the Consortium, Gianni Cesari, states: "Our mission is to preserve and promote the authenticity and quality of the Green Asparagus of Altedo, enhancing the territory from which it comes. We have recently celebrated twenty years of the Protection Consortium, and we will continue the activities through a series of events in the area, which will involve restaurants, chefs, and citizens who want to participate. We will be protagonists of Asparagustando, in collaboration with local restaurants and two historical festivals, the Green Asparagus Festival of Altedo and of Mesola. Both will be a unique opportunity to get to know and taste an extraordinary product of our land."

Production is currently expected slightly earlier in 2024 compared to previous years. The release of shoots from the ground is closely linked to the environmental temperature, which must be constant around 17-18° on average daily.
