Innovation in Almeria's tomato cultivation

The need for innovation and efficiency in Almeria is paramount, especially regarding greenhouse crops, as the Spanish province is known for hosting the world's highest concentration of greenhouses.

"Tomato cultivation is famous for demanding a significant amount of water, as this crop often requires up to 7,000 m³ of water per hectare. Tomatoes are very sensitive to both water scarcity and excess moisture in the soil. Controlling the quantity and quality of water and when the crops are watered is essential to ensure a healthy crop and maximize tomato yields," stated AZUD.

"The main irrigation challenges faced by tomato producers in Almeria were frequent pipe obstructions and irregular irrigation. In addition, the water came from a low-quality water source, an embankment with high organic content. As a result, the irrigation emitters would often be obstructed."

The best solution for precision drip irrigation
"To face these challenges, the farm turned to AZUD, a leading supplier of technology for agriculture in a region where greenhouse cultivation dominates the landscape, which provided an innovative solution that would transform the way tomatoes are grown on this farm in Almeria."

"The centerpiece of this transformation was the installation of irrigation pipes equipped with GENIUN PC AZUD emitters. These specialized emitters feature integrated self-compensating technology, anti-sealing mechanisms, and a self-cleaning maze."

"The farm complemented these emitters with the AZUD HELIX SYSTEM, an advanced disc filtration system that offers 130-micron filtration and a robust flow of 20 m³ per hectare."

"Together, these components are a comprehensive solution to this producer's irrigation problems, offering precise control, reduced maintenance, and improved yield."

Greater profitability with lower costs
The implementation of the AZUD solution provided several notable benefits. Uniform irrigation ensured the water and nutrients were homogeneously distributed throughout the crop, allowing producers to develop and carry out an adequate irrigation and fertilization schedule.

"The emitters' DS TECHNOLOGY self-cleaning labyrinth present was designed to avoid obstructions, ensuring the emitter's continuous and trouble-free operation. The solution significantly reduced maintenance costs by minimizing obstructions and associated issues."

"Improving irrigation effectiveness and reducing obstructions resulted in more efficient water and energy use. In addition, constant watering and proper nutrition helped producers produce higher-quality and more nutritious tomatoes. Ultimately, this solution made it possible to increase the profitability of farms by improving production and reducing operating expenses."
